Virgo New Moon - Analyzing Our Heritage

"Guided by my heritage of a love of beauty and a respect for strength - in search of my mother's garden, I found my own."

— Alice Walker

This Monday's Virgo New Moon (5:51 PM PDT 14° Virgo) brings themes of heritage and legacy. Since Mercury enters retrograde territory at the point of this New Moon, there is a definite emphasis on looking back to better understand where we have come from — our heritage and the work of our predecessors. There is a heightened sense of responsibility that comes from recognizing and honoring those who have come before us and that responsibility may weigh especially heavy on us this week. We may also recognize the first clues about the next retrograde Mercury phase (September 27 - October 18) this week. We may feel some uncertainty and indecision. Self-direction is difficult to maintain as we begin to look for ways to balance the past with our current circumstances. Virgo's organizational abilities and desire for order provides some assistance with self-direction as we begin to more closely examine our past and our heritage. But it is humble and unassuming Virgo's orientation towards service that offers us the most productive purpose and direction as we begin to move through the new lunar cycle. It is through a spirit of service and collaborative, 'group effort', that we can make the most of the potential that this lunar cycles offers. We will need to look for ways to balance our individual integrity with our responsibility to our predecessors, our heritage, and the past. It is important to note that this week's New Moon is in an exact trine to Uranus, stationary retrograde in Taurus. Since Uranus is generally associated with breaks from the past, there is significant tension from this aspect, despite the generally harmonious nature of the trine. The retrograding Uranus is serving to help us break down the restrictions of unworkable elements in our past that have crystalized and are hampering our forward progress. While we may have a responsibility to those who have come before us, we also must take responsibility to improve on what has been handed down. Some structures and traditions that have been handed down may no longer serve us. We cannot honestly honor our past without maintaining our own integrity and acknowledging what we see in front of us. Venus moves into Scorpio by Friday, which lends extra determination to our mission to clarify our connections to the past, our heritage, and our predecessors.

The Moon arrives in Virgo late on Sunday afternoon and foreshadows the themes of history and heritage that will be ushered in under Monday's Virgo New Moon. Clean-up and organization is on the table. Mercury reaches the shadow of the next retrograde Mercury on Monday under the Virgo New Moon. A marker is laid down and we begin to recognize the importance of our past, our heritage, and our predecessors. Indecision surfaces on Tuesday. We may have some difficulty understanding where our responsibilities lie. The atmosphere encourages erratic or impulsive behavior. Nervousness and excitability keep things difficult to pin down on Wednesday. Connection to a group effort will help us to maintain a productive sense of direction. Uncertainty pushes self-direction and assertiveness off a cliff on Thursday. There is a heavy sense of responsibility that may seem to weigh us down. Venus arrives in Scorpio on Friday and we gain extra determination to push through uncertainty and indecision. Progress may seem slow on Saturday and we tend to doubt our capacity to effectively handle the challenges that we face. However, we likely have more capability than we are giving ourselves credit for.
