Neptune made its appearance after the discovery of Uranus and took over the rulership of Pisces. Neptune rules the oceans as well as all that is intangible, vague and difficult if not impossible to define. It is associated with liquids, fog, dreams, visions, and escapes of all kinds, including drugs and religion. Neptune is the solvent which dissolves everything back into the ocean of unconsciousness and chaos from which we are born. It dissolves the debris left in the wake of Uranian shattering. Neptune is also the symbol for what survives this process of constant change. Every influence to this point is part of the architectural process by which the human spirit gains experience. The human spirit is the true reality which survives the process. An individual does not have a soul. S/he is a soul and has a body. It is only the intangible qualities of the soul that have immortality. It is only the excess baggage of material form that is forgotten, which is a testimony to how low we have sunk – that we often recognize so little of permanent worth. We are, too often, so identified with our physical bodies that we seem to have totally forgotten who we really are. But perhaps we are about to wake up. Neptune represents the culmination of the Moon, Venus and Jupiter functions and is considered to be the higher octave of Venus. The Moon, a water planet ruling the oceans, represents changeable and chaotic material supply, the substance out of which everything is brought forth. Venus provides the attraction which pulls the chaotic material together into meaningful form. Jupiter represents the vital force of spirit and is concerned with the functioning of this form. Jupiter expands the forms into ever larger meaningful wholes but always within and around the limitations and structure imposed by Saturn. Neptune is present throughout the entire process, concerned with the entity which makes this entire journey through matter. True reality, born from the illusion of solid matter, is found in Neptune’s transcendence of the material realm.
Neptune rules Pisces, the natural twelfth house, where the individual faces the consequences of life patterns. It indicates all forms of restraint such as imprisonment, hospitalization and psychosomatic illnesses. All of these things are the result of a failure to heed the still small voice of God. Before the individual can fully participate in the broad scope of human experience and become a true child of God, s/he must be able to discern the true from the false and resist the power of suggestion. ‘Let your Yea be Yea and your Nay be Nay.” People who are unwilling to face themselves and their own redemption fall victim to limitless Neptunian escapes. They may revel in psychic phenomena, thinking it is God speaking in a mysterious voice. They see visions and look for signs when the truth is all around them. Often they find some measure of truth but in time they find that they have been led to their own destruction. “A wicked and adulterous nation looketh after a sign, but there will be no sign.” Jesus said, “My sleep knoweth my voice.” We can never attract anything that is not in us. We are drawn unknowingly towards who we are. Jesus also said not to worry about what you will say when you are brought before the magistrate – you will say what is in you. “Judge not lest ye be judged.” This pertains to the fact that the judgment you use reveals more about yourself than the object of your judgment. The only escape is to clean up what you are. Then you don’t have to worry about black magic, psychic assault, or even Karma, which is the blessed process of redemption.
Neptune’s position in the chart will give clues to where you are vulnerable to deception or where you may find true insight into Divine Law. Neptune describes the measure by which you judge right and wrong, true and false. It shows where and how you listen for the still small voice or why you may only be looking for an escape. However, avoidance only brings you face to face with the problem. There is no way to escape ourselves.
If Neptune is very strong in the chart, the individual may be susceptible to all kinds of psychic deceptions or deeply sensitive and intuitive. They may be dreamy and absent-minded, impossible to pin down about anything. They live comfortably with vague generalities. There may be an exaggerated imagination. Often they are very lovable, sympathetic, inspirational and comfortable to be with if you aren’t trying to figure out something specific, and just want to relax. They are often uncompromising where a principle is concerned. This very quality often carries them to the top when they are right. Everything depends on the vague standards they set for themselves. Usually, they seem very inconsistent to other people. However, if you understand what moves them, you will find they are they are more consistent than anyone else. Most of the time they are flying blind, following a course they have charted for themselves, which they trust implicitly as though they were listening to the voice of the Divine. However, they can only be judged by their results, which may surprise them. There is no one harder to reason with than a Neptune person who feels they are following Divine inspiration.
When Neptune is strong and the individual is also in touch with tangible reality, they are uncanny in their ability to see through mirages, to play their hunches accurately and to sense what each situation calls for. However, they may not be able to explain the logic to anyone else.
