Capricorn

Excerpt from Degrees of the Zodiac:
CapricornCAPRICORN (December 23 - January 20) is the natural 10th house. As such, it represents the high point of the chart. It shows the heights to which an individual may rise. The effect is similar to that of the full moon or the noon point of the Sun when things come to a peak. As opposed to the 4th house influence of establishing a home, the 10th house has to do with the organization of a society or a corporation, or any large group of people. Its personal influence is where the individual comes before the public and builds his/her reputation. It also has to do with the mother and reflects on the reputation of the father. Natives of this sign are concerned about what other people think, more so than any other sign. They mold their behavior to conform to what is accepted and highly thought of.

The Sun is in the sign Capricorn during the first month of winter. As the Sun enters this sign, the days begin to lengthen. This is the real meaning of the Christmas season which was a pagan holiday before the birth of Christ. Jesus' birthday was set at this time because it was considered the birth of the Sun. Also, this is the time of year when the seed for the coming season is stored, awaiting spring. Capricorn is also indicative of spirit in the seed. Spirit in its most concentrated form, protected by the hard shell of the seed casing. Capricorns are protected by a rather hard and materialistic exterior. They are concerned with their material security and they are inclined to become the "Scrooges" of the world, never accumulating enough material means to allow them to feel safe. Capricorns have a difficult time expressing the softer nature beneath this exterior. They show their affection for those they love by serving them or waiting on them in some way. They provide the material things necessary for the happiness and well-being of those they love and yet, when someone more adept at sympathy and understanding comes along, the Capricorn native does not understand why his long service failed to hold the affection of those he so faithfully served. This cardinal Earth sign and these people are active in long, hard, laborious jobs which require diligence and persistent effort.

Saturn, as the ruler of Capricorn, is the timekeeper and taskmaster, seeing that all the requirements are met and that each job is well done. Saturn demands careful planning and sees to it that no weak spots are left in the structure. Saturn also represents fear of failure and punishment of one kind or another. It is a stern ruler demanding perfection of its subjects. Capricorns find it hard to understand why others seem to get away with things they would never dare risk. But all of us have Saturn and Capricorn somewhere in the chart and others may not get away with as much as it seems.

Wherever Capricorn is found in the chart, its action is restrictive and the position and degree of Saturn will show more clearly its action. Capricorns are inherently more intuitive and spiritual than is obvious. Their hard exterior has kept them from revealing their more true nature. As humanity becomes more appreciative of the things Capricorn is capable of, we may expect to see a change in the characteristics of this sign, for they are not pioneers. They will not display anything that they are not certain will be accepted. They are able to build a better product but they will not do so until society as a whole recognizes a better product. We see in Capricorn only what Capricorn is certain we will appreciate. Sagittarius pulls the philosophy of the culture together and gives it expression which appears to be creative and original but it is only what it has been given to make sense out of. It is the function of Capricorn to display what society has accumulated. Capricorns represent the heads of State. However, such people are not chosen for these positions unless they speak for the majority. A dictator cannot be ignored and stay in power. He must speak for the majority. If he is too far ahead or too far behind he will be ignored. It is the job of Capricorn to speak for where people are. He must keep in touch with the masses, not the best or the worst, but just where we are as a whole society or group structure.

The hope we have is in the seed that begins to grow in the spring. It is not a Capricorn age in which we live. We live in a time when humanity is sprouting out in many directions and breaking the boundaries set by Saturn. Frankly, this is a very confusing time for the conservative Capricorn. However, Capricorn must play its part in the whole function. Even though, in the Age of Aquarius, humanity will not be bound by past limits, it is Capricorn, which recognizes that a new boundary must be set far beyond our previous limits. It will be the Capricorn that sees the boundary of a new society which gives form to all of the apparent differences of opinion, while Aquarius characterizes the burst of growth, sometimes tragic, that breaks through the seed wall or the shell of the egg, to behold new horizons.
