PREFACE

It is well known that all people born under the same Sun sign are not alike. There are many reasons for this, the most obvious being that there are many factors in the chart which contribute to individuality and uniqueness. The exact pattern of the horoscope is never repeated exactly. Nevertheless, the influence of the location of the Sun in a particular time produces an effect which is of unmistakable significance.
One of the major keys to understanding basic differences in people born under the same Sun sign can be found by considering the sign placement of the ruler of the Sun sign or Ascendant. For example, Mars ruling Aries may be located in any of the twelve signs. Where it is found will have a profound effect on how the individual expresses the Aries qualities. The slower moving planets such as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto move very slowly and affect whole generations. They also impact the expression of the sign through which they are transiting, affecting everyone in ways that always show up historically. Therefore, the comments related to Scorpio (Pluto), Aquarius (Uranus) and Pisces (Neptune) are informed by this broader context.

Of course, when the Sun as the ruler of Leo is in Leo, it cannot be found in any of the other signs but it does rule the Leo Ascendant from any of the other signs. Therefore, I have dealt with the Sun's rulership of Leo as the rising sign ruler only. As well, Venus moves no more than 48 degrees away from the Sun and Mercury, only 27 – 28 degrees away at its furthest point. Thus, when discussing the rulerships of Venus (Taurus and Libra) and Mercury (Gemini and Virgo), most of the sign positions specifically apply only to the rulership of the rising sign.

This edition also includes a section discussing the proposed rulership of Libra by Chiron (“The New Libra”), the minor planet discovered in 1977. While some assign the maverick planet the rulership of Sagittarius and others doubt any rulership assignment at all, I have found indications that Chiron opens the door to a bold, new understanding of human relatedness and self expression within the context of relationships with others. As such, its connection to Libra seems to me to be quite significant.

Finally, while this book is tailored specifically to rulership in terms of the Sun sign and rising sign, there are certainly clues to be found when assessing other influences in the horoscope. For example, a particular stellium of planets, not specifically connected to the Sun or Ascendant, may produce a strong enough compound Sign influence that the impact of the rulership of the sign of the stellium may be taken into account as described in this book.
