Pisces

Excerpt from Degrees of the Zodiac:

PiscesPISCES (February 20- March 20) is the natural 12th house. In Pisces, the last stage of our journey through the Zodiac, we face our failures. It is death into oblivion or birth into a new life. In Virgo and the 6th house, the individual seeks to perfect what was created in Leo and the 5th house. This is in preparation to become a social being in Libra. In Pisces, the individual seeks to perfect the spirit and faces the unconscious. There is no past glory or social structure to cling to. The only hope is to freely let go and go on. Everything we try to cling to holds us back and makes our existence more painful. We must sacrifice ourselves in order that a new self might be born. We are not able to take what we cling to with us into the beyond. We face only the stark, naked reality of the delicate nature of the spirit. Much depends on how much unnecessary baggage we are carrying around with us. We may approach this sacrifice with defensiveness, struggling to hold on to misconceptions. We may be imprisoned. Or we may realize that we must give up and become willing to undergo the corrections in order to begin anew with a new vision. Ideally, we find acceptance; although we have failed many times, we have lived life with awareness and sought to correct each fault as best we could. Pisces arrives at the time of year when we face the most devastating weather, which provides sufficient softening to crack the protecting wall of the seed before spring arrives and brings new sprouts and tender shoots.

The highest development which Pisces can attain is not a personal release from sin. Pisces cannot, having attained perfection, turn around on the path and abandon society. The individual is not complete alone. It is not personal salvation alone that must be sought, although that must come first. Personal salvation only brings to the individual a greater responsibility to work for the salvation of all of humanity. Pisces represents not only the end of a cycle, but the beginning. When we let go of the past, there is an expectant awareness sensitive in all directions. Life is fresh and keen, ready to collect a new material form, to build a new structure.

Neptune, as the ruler of Pisces, represents intuition, psychic awareness and knowing. It also rules all forms of escape such as drugs, alcohol, as well as religious concepts that make a savior the scapegoat for individual sins. No one else can save us. We must save ourselves. In Pisces, we stand naked before God. There is no escape from ourselves. Neptune rules liquids and the oceans from whence all life comes. It is associated with deception as well as foggy and unclear situations. Only an awareness which pierces through such deception will carry the native through the clouds. It is necessary to develop here a knowing not based simply on material facts. Neptune and Pisces contribute the influences necessary to the development of the soul and spirit. They comprise the empty spaces. Science is learning that the empty spaces are actually the most basic, solid reality of matter. Scientists have finally come to understand that what appears to us as solid is not, in fact, solid at all.

Pisces individuals live on the borderline between the reality of the past and the promise of the future. Some of them are almost total misfits, others are almost perfectly attuned. They walk a vague line which they are unable to explain whether or not they are tuned in. They do what they do for reasons often impossible to understand whether they are right or wrong. We find Pisces in the gutter and also in the highest positions of honor and accomplishment. They survive on faith for lack of anything else. If their faith is well-placed they succeed, if not, they are lost. There are all gradations in between.

The Piscean Age, which we are just now completing, was based on faith. We have been subjected to a period, particularly in the last two hundred years, that has emphasized science and tried to challenge Piscean faith, pointing out the weaknesses. But science is leading us back to Piscean truths, as well as some Piscean misconceptions and escapes. The fact that solid material is not really solid but is composed mostly of space held together by whirling atoms is an example Piscean truth. Much of religion, which we were forced to accept on the basis of faith was actually a false promise. But accepting science on faith is no solution. Humanity is now trying to understand intangible concepts and faces the karmic result of distorted and misunderstood truths. The Aquarian age brings knowledge to challenge what has been accepted purely on faith. During this new age, humanity may recognize its true nature. But we must be willing to drop the false hopes, the misconceptions and the structures which housed them before we can go on to build a new structure, incorporating the new gifts of Aquarian knowledge with the wisdom we inherit from the past.

All of us have a Pisces influence in the chart. We find out more about this aspect of ourselves by looking to the house Pisces occupies together with the 12th house influence and the position of Neptune. Any degrees we have activated in the sign Pisces, together with the nature of the planets to be found there, tell us more about this area of our total being.

"You are your own devil, you are your own god,
You fashioned the path that your footsteps have trod.
And no one can save you from error or sin,
Until you shall hark to the spirit within."

– Ella Wheeler Wilcox
