Cancer

Excerpt from Degrees of the Zodiac:

CancerCANCER (June 22 - July 22) is the natural 4th house of the Zodiac. It is my assertion that the Earth is always located on the degree of the fourth house cusp. Cancer has to do with the home and family, specifically the mother. It is a cardinal sign and as such its concept of self has expanded to include whatever it is able to identify as belonging to itself. Cancer is first possessive about his/her mother. The first lesson s/he must learn is to understand his/her own identity separate from the mother and the home. The 4th house shows your childhood experiences as well as your retirement years. The Moon, which always stays in the earth's orbit, circling the Earth once each month, rules the sign Cancer.

The Cancer individual attaches to a mate, which s/he considers his/her own. With modern understanding that we can not own another person, Cancer is forced to modify his/her ancient and traditional declaration of ownership but his/her possessive feelings are still there to be dealt with. This possessive feeling is characteristic of both men and women of this sign. S/he tends to be perhaps more possessive of people than things, but his/her home is his/her own and s/he is highly protective of it. This expands to his/her children. Cancer is the most fruitful sign of the Zodiac. And s/he has a more possessive attitude toward his/her children than any other sign. They must not misbehave because of the reflection on him/her. This expansion can also include his/her country. Cancer is very patriotic. Even if s/he disagrees with the direction his/her country is taking s/he loves his/her country and will work hard to set it on what s/he believes to be the right track. The Cancer consciousness can even be expanded to include humanity as their own. By the time they reach this level, they have become the children once more of the larger whole of humanity.

Cancer is ruled by the Moon which is continually changing its relationship to the Sun as it orbits the Earth and reflects the Sun's light. This causes Cancer people, responsive to the Moon, to appear to be in a constant state of moody flux similar to the changing tides of the ocean. However, the Moon does not really change. What changes is the reflection of the Sun's light. The Moon itself remains constant as does the ocean except on the periphery of its shore. At the depths, the ocean waters hold stable under very high pressure. And so it is with Cancers.

Cancers gather an immense amount of experience and observation which they ingest. Cancer rules the stomach which prepares what is ingested for the body's assimilation. Cancer people are also most prone to ulcers of the stomach under prolonged and severe strain. They are very sensitive with well-developed feelings. The feeling part of their nature is always right on the surface. They take in the sentimental things that touch them and easily well up with tears. They have their defenses up and are on guard when threatened. They, like the Crab which symbolizes Cancer, walk sideways around everything, checking it out to see whether it is going to upset the home they have established. Cancer takes a negative approach until it has seen all sides and never lets anything or anyone inside until they have made the complete circuit to their satisfaction. This may also be linked to the time it takes the Moon to make the complete circuit around the Earth.
